하울의 움직이는 성 (2004)
미야자키 하야오가 만든 작품에선 좋게 말하면 "스타일", 나쁘게 말하면 "틀"이 느껴진다. 소년, 소녀의 잔잔한 사랑 이야기, 중세시대 유럽의 어느 시골마을을 연상케 하는 배경, 공상적이지만 소박한 기계적 소품들... 이 작품도 그 틀을 크게 벗어나지 않지만, 지겹다는 생각은 전혀 들지 않을만큼 재미있다. 특히 원작과 캐릭터가 돋보이는데, 나중에 알아보니 이 작품의 원작은 <반지의 제왕>을 쓴 톨킨의 제자이자 "영국 판타지의 여왕"으로 불리는 다이애나 윈 존스가 쓴 것이다. 깡총깡총 뛰어다니는 허수와비와 달걀껍질을 과자처럼 씹어먹는 화톳불은 귀엽기 짝이 없는데다, 눈 깜짝할 사이에 꼬부랑 할머니가 되서도 담담하게 자신의 처지를 받아들이고, 주변 사람을 챙겨주는 여주인공의 모습은 미야자키 하야오 작품에 나왔던 여러 주인공의 모습을 오버랩시킨다. 빨간머리 앤이나 프란다스의 개풍의 손맛어린 그림체 또한 정겹기 그지없다. 일본어 대사라 정확한 판단은 못하겠지만, 기무라 타쿠야 라는 얼짱 배우의 성우 역할도 비교적 잘 어울린다. 굳이 흠아닌 흠을 잡자면, 모든 작품의 테마가 "마모루"(守る;지키다)란 점인데, 이거는 야애니에서 "야메떼"를 뺄 수 없는 것처럼 일본 영화의 필수 대사이자 교훈인 듯 싶다. 암튼 2005년이 끝나가는 시점에서 영화 베스트원을 뽑는다면, <하울의 움직이는 성> 이라 말하겠다. 2004년작이라 무효라면 할 수 없지만...
